A modern slavery investigation has led to 15 people aged between 22 and 54 appearing before magistrates in Lincoln charged with a total of 53 offences between them.

The charges came after Lincolnshire Police launched Operation Pottery, a major investigation into modern slavery in the county.

Officers joined forces with the National Crime Agency to execute search warrants at locations across Lincolnshire earlier this year.

Other forces raided addresses elsewhere in the country as part of the investigation.

As a result of the raids, seven people, who are the alleged victims of modern slavery, were cared for by teams from Adult Care at Lincolnshire County Council with support from NHS staff.

Of the defendants, five gave their addresses as Washingborough Road Gypsy Site, and six as Sheffield Road, Drinsey Nook, Lincoln. Other live at locations including Sheffield and Buckinghamshire.

Of the 15 that appeared in the dock, six face specific charges relating to modern slavery, including holding another person in slavery or servitude or requiring someone to perform forced or compulsory labour.

A number of individuals in the group also face charges including possessing criminal property to the value of around £250,000 cash, as well as allegations of fraud, accusations of cheating the public revenue and also stealing items including a caravan and more than £14,000 of bricks.

They all appeared in court on Wednesday morning.

No pleas were entered on any of the charges that they face.

Thirteen were released on bail with a variety of conditions attached, while two of the accused, John Martin Felix Rooney, 29, and Martin Rooney, 22, were remanded in custody.

All 15 are due to appear at Lincoln Crown Court on Wednesday, November 25.
