Two charity bosses have been accused of stealing more than £500,000 from Lincoln and District Mencap over six years.

Peter and Alison Childs face more than 60 charges between them, including fraud and theft. The couple, from Hall Lane in Nettleham, appeared at Lincoln Magistrates' Court this week.

The allegations relate to a six-year period between December 2005 and December 2011.

During that time, Mr Childs, 60, was chairman of the independent charity and Mrs Childs, 46, was accommodation manager. Mr Childs faces 32 charges. Mrs Childs faces 29 charges.

Among the charges are allegations that the pair stole utility payments and savings from service users.

It is also alleged they falsified the charity's annual accounts.

In total, the charges relate to more than £500,000 of missing money, the court was told. No pleas were entered during the hearing on Tuesday, January 8.

They were released on bail and will return to Lincoln Magistrates' Court on March 5 for committal to crown court.

The charity was based in Tentercroft Street before it closed in November 2011.
