A bed and breakfast in Lincoln has been named as the one of the top ten guest houses of its kind in the country by a leading travel website.

Creston Villa Guest House, in St Catherines, secured the tenth ranking for a B&B on TripAdvisor's annual list of the world's top destinations.

The business is run by Iain and Anna Brown and has had its most successful year since it opened in 2006.

The guest house has returned to the prestigious list after being named the eighth best in the world in 2011 but missing out on a ranking last year.

It has also remained as the website's top Lincoln B&B for six years.

The TripAdvisor roundup is based on reviews submitted online throughout the year.

Mr Brown, 58, said: "We're really pleased and it's been a phenomenal year for us.

"Our occupancy rate was 82 per cent last year, compared to 75 per cent in 2011 and an average of around 70 per cent.

"TripAdvisor is extremely important for us. About 35 per cent of our guests have looked at the website before coming and we have a lot of repeat customers who recommend us to family and friends, which has a big effect."

Mr Brown attributes his business's success to a focus on high levels of customer service and listening to feedback.

He said the B&B had grown a good reputation with travelers and often welcomed people from across the world.

One couple who stayed at Creston Villa during the 2012 Lincoln Christmas Market wrote a review on TripAdvisor stating: "We cannot praise Iain and Anna too highly.

"They made our brief stay memorable – attention to detail, quality of the room, the surroundings and the food, magnificent."

The guesthouse has four double rooms and two twin rooms, with enough space for 12 guests. It also has a dining area and private parking.

Mr and Mrs Brown started the B&B with no previous business experience, but they have managed to make it a success despite the economic climate.

Mrs Brown, 53, said she was proud of the recent TripAdvisor endorsement.

She said: "I'm proud because I'm a Lincoln girl and I'm doing it for the city. I think I was more excited about this than when we were ranked eighth in the world. I'm really pleased.

"To be honest I really do enjoy the job. We get to meet lovely people from all over the world. I think our success is down to hard work and not judging people and treating them with respect.

"Whoever walks through the door is a guest straight away.

"We have people who are going to funerals or weddings and you have to understand people's needs."

The TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice 2013 list also includes the best beaches, restaurants and destinations in the world.
