A Lincoln Cathedral verger decided to have his long locks chopped off to raise much-needed money for the turret appeal.
Daniel Auckland, hadn't had a haircut for almost eight years but decided the time was right for change.
Members of the congregation gathered in the Chapter on Sunday morning to watch experienced barber Frank Connell, who was entrusted with the important job of lopping off the long locks, work his magic.
The 31-year-old told the Echo: "I came up with this idea a few months ago – I thought it was something relatively easy I could do to try to make a difference.
"We need to raise around £14 million for the turret appeal and every little helps. So far I've raised £650 but more donations are expected to roll in in the coming week or so.
His wife, Anne told the Echo: "I was a bit dubious when he first told us as we've grown used to his long hair but I think he suits it short now."
Daniel is also planning on donating the chopped-off ponytail to a wig charity for children suffering with cancer.
Donations are still flooding in and can be made at www.justgiving.com/Daniel- Auckland.
