My summer was extremely boring. Do you know why? It was because of research.
It was tedious and there was lots of travelling too, but it was imperative to find the players with the belief that could take this club forward.
I suppose the higher you go, you have people who will go and do that for you.
But no. I had to slip into my shoes and meet these players to explain my method.
The horses for the courses obviously come at a price and if you want to run at Glorious Goodwood you need the appropriate horse.
And given the courses we will visit, such as the Dartfords and the Tamworths, you need players with the characteristics who can stand up to such tests.
When I meet players, I like to see confidence in them.
If they have that, then I know they will go that extra mile. But essentially it's all down to pound notes.
Players love them and we don't have them. And when they found that out they were storming out of the car park.
I'm not saying all players are mercenaries, far from it.
But they are out there. Now, those that are not fussed about money have come in here and know our boundaries and what we expect.
Obviously if you want to retain belief and the attitude where everybody will fight for the cause, then it's important you do not have players who are travelling in a horse and cart and others in a Rolls Royce.
That's why I put a wage cap in place at this football club.
There has to be a sensible pay structure here, but it would be wrong of me to reveal what it is because I don't want other clubs knowing what we pay.
Certainly last season, and some of this campaign as well, there has been a legacy of where players have been paid a lot of money.
I have no problem with that, it was before my time and circumstances may have dictated that.
But the situation we are in now is very different.
The club is not in a recession, but in a position where it is reapplying some of the fundamental changes that will help self sustainability.
The club can no longer hang on to contracts that are unrealistic.
If we can redevelop that and build, build and build then we will be successful.
It does not come overnight, it never does.
But what we have, and what does give you the best possible chance, is that we have players with belief and who know the perimeters.
There are no big time Charlies here.
There's no major discrepancies in pay which can create problems and harm dressing rooms.
I believe we have spent every penny wisely.
All the players are earning the correct amount for where they are in their careers at the moment.
Some are on relatively low money. But I hope the likes of Vadaine Oliver and company go on to earn a great deal.
Good luck to them.
They have the platform to do it. They are treated correctly and to me that's worth more than a few extra quid.
