A FORMER Gainsborough Town Mayor is among the candidates declared for two town council by-elections caused by resignations of members.

Retired businessman Councillor Mick Tinker, of Middlefield Lane, was Mayor of Gainsborough in 1996.

Since then he's served on the town, West Lindsey district and Lincolnshire County authorities.

The 65-year-old is in a four-cornered fight for the Gainsborough east ward seat vacated by newly-elected independent Sean Brennan in April – only a month after he won his poll.

Independent Richard Charles Banyard, of Haltham Green, will be challenging alongside UK Independence Party candidate John William Beaver, from The Rowans in the town, and James Alexander Plastow, of Park Springs Road.

But only two candidates are to contest the second by-election in the south west ward following the resignation of Councillor Trevor Young, who still sits on the district council.

John Butler, from Alfred Street, is standing under the Gainsborough Residents' Concerns and Issues banner.

His opponent will be another Gainsborough Town Mayor – independent Tim Davies, from Wheeldon Street.

Both polls will be on Thursday, July 12.
