Fans of rousing performances from big bands and orchestras have quite a choice next Saturday as several concerts promise a medley of classics for audiences.

The Terry O'Toole Theatre will welcome the county's own 18-piece professional swing orchestra on February 9 (7.30pm). The Good Guys Orchestra will be revealing a new programme, with a mix of big band classics.

Guy Garret, leader of the Good Guys says: "We try and make sure we play at least one concert a year in Lincoln where we have built a loyal following. It's great to have the chance this year to play at the Terry O'Toole Theatre which has done such a lot to support local music."

The nucleus of the group are former RAF musicians who, like Guy, learned their craft in the RAF Dance Band The Squadronaires.

On the same night, The Lincolnshire Philharmonia Orchestra will perform a varied programme of classic film music, from as far back as the 1930s up until the present day, at the Whittle Hall, RAF College Cranwell (Saturday, February 9, 7.30pm). They will be conducted by Flt Lt Matthew Little, director of music for the band of the RAF Regiment.

Highlights include music from Fantasia, as well as a solo violin performance taken from Schindler's List and performed by orchestra leader Caroline Siriwardena. The first half will end with the Golden Age of Hollywood and music taken from the film The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex.

The rest of the evening will include a collection of the best numbers from Girl Crazy that starred Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Mascagni's Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, used for The Godfather, the music of John Williams from ET, also the iconic Dambusters March.

(All tickets £6 and can be reserved for collection on the day by calling Christopher Owen on 07977 803621. All other enquiries should be directed to the orchestra committee, c/o The Band of the RAF Regiment by calling 01400 267680.)
