A new photography competition has been launched to help uncover some of Lincolnshire's hidden gems, both in front of and behind the lens.

The Echo has teamed up with the University of Lincoln to put some of the most creative and imaginative snappers from across the county in the frame.

And with three iPad 2s up for grabs, budding photographers are being urged to grab their cameras and take part in the contest.

The theme is "hidden Lincolnshire", with judges looking for striking and interesting images that stand out.

There are three age categories – 14 to 16, 16 to 18 and 18-plus – meaning there's plenty of opportunity for teenagers and adults to bag one of the prizes.

Ken Evans, marketing and communications manager at the university, said the judges would be looking for photographers who thought outside of the box.

"This competition is about trying to get a different take on Lincoln and Lincolnshire and shine the light on some of its uncovered items, people or aspects," he said.

"The photographer's subject could be something related to architecture, business, people or landscape – hidden Lincolnshire is about what Lincolnshire means to you.

"There are three age categories so we believe there's something for younger photographers as well as older ones.

"We want to celebrate the richness and diversity of the Lincolnshire and what it's like to live and work here.

"What the judges are really going to be looking out for is the creative side to their photographs.

"Good shots will always look good, but despite all the technology with Photoshop and multi-function cameras, you still need to have an imaginative eye so you don't end up with something conventional.

"What we really want to see is a view of Lincolnshire through the prism of the photographer."

Echo photographer Anna Draper added that for entrants to stand out, they should approach their photographs from different angles.

"The clue is in the theme," she said. "You need to look for something that's out of the ordinary, something you wouldn't normally see, and maybe try shooting it from a different angle."

Entrants to the competition are asked to provide a 30-word caption for their photograph, as well as their name, age, address and contact details.

The deadline is Thursday, November 27. Entries can be submitted by e-mailing photocontest@lincolnshiremedia.co.uk

Submitted images must be the photographer's own and taken within the last 12 months. They should be submitted in a JPEG format and be a minimum size of 1MB.

A longlist of finalists will be published in our Picture This supplement on December 3.

The winners will be announced in the December 27 issue of the Echo.
