A tough opening week in Blue Square Bet North will be met head on by Gainsborough Trinity.

The Blues will play Gloucester on the opening day at home and then they face two tough away trips to Stalybridge Celtic and Guiseley.

Manager Steve Housham, though, is sure his new-look side will be ready after bringing them back to work early for pre-season training, writes Dave Marshall.

"That's a tough start to the season, but we aim to be ready," said the Trinity boss.

"I brought them back early so that we are well prepared and can hit the ground running.

"We have begun training already and they are all working hard.

"We will be ready, both mentally and physically, and hopefully we will get off to a flyer.

"Nothing is ever won in the first week of the new season, but it is important to get the supporters on side, especially if your first game is at home."

The fixtures also threw up mouth-watering matches during the Christmas period, with a trip to Halifax on Boxing Day before the Shaymen visit the Northolme on New Year's Day.

"The Christmas fixtures will be good," added Housham.

"We have a good rapport with Halifax and the fixtures between the sides last year were very closely fought.

"They will be good matches for the supporters so we will look forward to those."

Meanwhile, Trinity's pre-season fixtures begin this weekend with a trip to Northern Counties East League, Division One outfit Bottesford (3pm).

"We have quite a few pre-season matches arranged, starting with Bottesford on Saturday," said Housham.

"I don't think we will be fielding many first-team players in the first few games, but there will be a mixture of trialists and youngsters."
