Rap star Jay-Z has been invited to visit Lincoln’s copy of Magna Carta while he’s in the UK on his 'Magna Carta' European tour.

The American music mogul, who is married to Beyonce, has announced five UK dates to perform his album, currently the number 1 downloaded album on iTunes after it was released on Monday.

And with him being within 100 miles of the copy of the historical document, it is the perfect opportunity for the '99 problems' singer to visit Lincoln.

Jay-Z has already made a private visit to Salisbury Cathedral on Sunday, July 14, to see its version of Magna Carta. He made the trip after saying his new album was inspired by the line "to no one will we sell, to no one will we deny or delay, right or justice", which is included in the 798-year-old document.

The hip-hop star, who was not accompanied by his wife, was spotted driving through the city in a classic Aston Martin in the late morning sunshine.

He then posed for pictures as he toured the Chapter House where Magna Carta is displayed.

The performer chose Salisbury Cathedral as the location for the global launch of the artwork for his the album.

Phil Hamlyn-Williams, chief executive of Lincoln Cathedral, which owns the copy of Magna Carta, said: “He has been to Salisbury to see their copy and to shoot some publicity material for the tour and album,” he said.

“But we’d love him to come up and show him Magna Carta, the Cathedral and everything this great city has to offer."

The app released by Samsung which allowed one million customers access to the album for free has come in for criticism.

It was claimed that the app took "massive amounts of personal information from users, including location data" and featured "hidden spam techniques" to promote the add-on to other mobile phone users.
