Around 280 stalls will be taking part in this year's Lincoln Christmas Market, offering food, drink, bespoke gifts, hand-crafted goodies and festive treats.

Following a record breaking 350,000 visitors in 2011, some 400 stallholder applications were received, consisting of almost 200 new businesses never seen before at the market.

This year, the market area has been expanded with stalls spread over a wider area. A one-way pedestrian traffic system will take people up Steep Hill and back down via Drury Lane and Michaelgate.

Stalls will all be separated into 14 areas: Castle Square, Castle Square food court, Castle grounds, the Lawn outdoor, the Lincoln Suite, Christmas Bazaar at the Lawn, Lincolnshire Larder, Westgate Outdoor, Westgate craft marquee, Westgate Big Wheel, perfect presents, Assembly Rooms, Bailgate outdoor and Cathedral.

Discounts of up to 15 per cent for local companies has resulted in Lincolnshire being well-represented with a Lincolnshire Larder area at this year's event.

WHAT'S NEW

New additions to look out for include Steep Hill Wines who will be selling their special spiced cider infused with orange liquor, from the grounds of the Lawn.

Another local stall to look out for in the Assembly Rooms is LA Giftware, a new-start business opening premises in Lincoln this year. They will be selling quirky Christmas decorations, figures, garlands and other unique items to decorate homes for the festive period.

Lincoln-based online business, The Cosy Nest, will be joining the market this year, selling a newly launched range of microwaveable warm and cosy soft toys and re-heatable hand-warmers in the Cathedral area.

The market takes over an hour to get round but there are several places to take a break from the elements. Several market areas such as the Castle food court, Assembly Rooms and the Lincoln Suite at the Lawn will offer a place to warm-up.

Visitors can also take a break in Westgate School as well as in church halls which will be signposted. A warm welcome awaits at the Advent Wreath Festival in the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, open from 12pm daily, in the Bailgate.

ENTERTAINMENT

New for 2012 is a specially erected stage at St Paul in the Bail which is set to boost the varied entertainment programme over the four days.

Performances from local groups will include A Christmas Carol and St Nicholas from The Chapterhouse Theatre Company and pantomime from the Lindsay Rural Players. Bishop Grosseteste University will feature in a number of shows, including seasonal Shakespeare.

Music will come from singer, Phil Gray, the Salvation Army Band, The Showroom, Broadbent Singers, Newlife Choir and Boston Grammar School Jazz Band, completing a varied line-up on stage.

Entertainment will be spread across the Christmas market with Victorian gentlemen bearing gifts in the Bailgate, Santa Clause in Eastgate and The Da Capo Singers and Bird&Bee and their harmony machine at the Cathedral.

A Big Wheel overlooking the Lincoln Castle grounds and Cathedral is the centrepiece of the rides on Westgate and the fairground will be brought to life as sounds of an 1890 Germain-built organ flow from the Christmas Bazaar marquee in the Lawn.

WEATHER

Waterproof clothing may be necessary as there is currently a chance of showers throughout the four-day event. The best weather is forecast on Saturday with spells of rain most likely on Sunday.

Temperatures are set for a slight rise towards the end of the week but with wind it will still feel like freezing.
