Lincoln City boss Gary Simpson has all but ruled himself out of being reunited with John Rooney as he steps up his striker search.
Speculation had linked the City chief with a move for the former Macclesfield forward who he worked with at Moss Rose.
Rooney, the younger brother of Wayne, left the Silkmen to join New York Red Bulls in 2010 and later enjoyed a spell with Orlando City before returning to England with Barnsley.
But he was released at the end of the campaign and is now looking for a new club.
Asked about several targets who could be on his radar, including ex-City loanee Ashley Grimes, Simpson said: "I know these players and they would be probably be a bit too rich for our budget.
"I've not spoken to John Rooney since he left Macclesfield and I can't see him coming here as the type of player he is we already have."
