The old and the new have made it into the real ale hall of fame by being included in the Good Beer Guide.

The Adam & Eve Tavern in Lindum Road and The Centurion in North Hykeham will both appear in the 2013 edition, compiled by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA)

Steve Renshaw, Secretary of the Lincoln branch of CAMRA, said: "These new entries illustrate the diversity of pubs in the guide.

"The Adam & Eve is reputedly the oldest tavern in Lincoln, dating back to 1701, whereas The Centurion is a modern, family friendly pub and restaurant.

"But the thing they have in common is that they serve consistently good real ale."

Bill McCamlie, manager of new entry The Centurion, said: "It's great to be recognised by CAMRA as a champion of cask ales. The last pub I managed, in Manchester, was accepted into the guide, so it's fantastic to achieve it again. For me, you can't get a better accolade than this."

They join more than 4,500 pubs across the UK, featured in the guide, including 110 in Lincolnshire.

And CAMRA believes that "if a publican looks after the cask beer in the cellar then everything else in the pub is likely to receive the same care."

When asked on why his pub is so highly regarded, Mr McCamlie said: "We try to have a good selection of regular cask ales, as well as a weekly selection of different ales that people can come in and try before they buy."

"Cask ales are like wine, it depends on the person.

"The secret is having a wide variety and that way you hopefully have something that appeals to all ages and sexes."

Mr McCamlie said he hoped the entry would boost business.

"Hopefully, we can now attract more cask ale drinkers," he said. "The more cask ale we sell, the bigger selection we can have."

Regular patron, Gus Lees, 64, of North Hykeham said: "The pub always has a good selection of ales throughout the year."

However, it's not only the ales that attract the patrons.

"There's no rough people, it's a nice, tidy, spacious pub, with good food and beer, where you can have a decent conversation," added Mr Lees.

Bob John, 58, of Station Road in North Hykeham, said: "The Centurion has the cheapest beer in the area.

"Lots of people come in, look at the selection, sample them and, when they find one they like, they go for it.

"Everyone gets on really well and there's a nice atmosphere and there's a mix of people of all ages, we even have a laugh with the youngsters."

The guide will be published on Thursday September 13.
