The Bishop of Lincoln has asked Lincolnshire Police to investigate the Diocese of Lincoln.
Right Reverend Christopher Lowson confirmed he has handed over documents for officers to examine.
In a statement today, he said: "Information has come to light which today has been handed to the police.
"This information was acted on as soon as it came to light after consultation with the Chair of the Lincoln Diocesan Trust and Board of Finance and our auditors.
"Pastoral support has been offered to Diocesan staff, and I am sure that you will continue to hold the work of the Diocese in your prayers.
"I am determined that this process should be dealt with fairly and in the correct manner, and therefore it would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this stage."
In a statement, Lincolnshire Police said: "Lincolnshire Police can confirm that they have had a matter officially referred to them by Lincoln Diocese. However, at the moment, it is too early to say whether this will lead to an investigation until initial enquiries have been made."
