North Somercoates sailor, Sarah Gowler, was presented with the prestigious RYA East Midlands Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award 2012 at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show on Saturday (12 January 2013).
The award, from British sailing's national governing body, recognises the outstanding achievements of youth sailors and powerboaters across the country.
Covenham Sailing Club's Sarah was voted RYA East Midlands Regional Young Sailor of the Year 2012 last autumn in recognition of her dedication and work as a volunteer assistant with her club's disability sailing group, Covenham Sailability, as well her own commitment and achievements as a young sailor.
Covenham Sailability provides opportunities for disabled people to learn to sail and sail regularly as part of the national Sailability programme run by the RYA. Having been a member of Covenham SC since she was 11, she has rarely missed a Sailability session at the club during this time. She assists with anything that needs doing from rigging the Access dinghies to accompanying those sailors with physical impairments on the water.
Sarah was also selected for the RYA North Zone Youth Development Squad in the autumn; the RYA's junior Zone Squad programme is the first step on the ladder to Olympic classes sailing. She is an excellent role model, always demonstrating a positive attitude and bringing a smile to the face of everyone she meets
Sarah was amongst 13 RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners who are nominated by RYA affiliated sailing clubs. These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold-medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.
The awards were presented by Bob Fisher, Chairman of the Yachting Journalists Association (YJA). Sarah and her family were treated to an action packed VIP day at the show courtesy of Pantaenius Yacht Insurance.
