Man arrested after teenage girl reports sexual assault in Grantham

A man has been arrested after a teenage girl reported being sexually assaulted in Grantham, Lincolnshire.

The 17-year-old victim was walking past Wellies chip shop in Springfield Road at around 5.15am on Sunday when she was approached by a man.

He allegedly made threats and forced her to a nearby car in Tilling Close.

The car is described as an "old-style" black Vauxhall Corsa.

From there the offender is alleged to have driven the victim to the Grantham Canal Towpath where he assaulted her. He is then alleged to have returned the victim by car to the junction of Huntingtower Road/ Springfield Road.

A 20-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with this incident and has been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who believes they saw this incident, or the car that is allegedly connected to it at any point on Sunday in Grantham, to call them as soon as possible.

Officers are particularly keen to trace a woman, who appeared to be waiting for a lift, who was seen in Springfield Road shortly after the victim was returned to the area.

Ch Insp Gary Stewart said: "This incident is believed to be isolated and this type of crime is extremely rare in the town. We would urge anyone with any information to get in touch with our officers as soon as possible."
