When a brash and feisty Liverpudlian hairdresser meets jaded university professor Dr Frank Bryant the effect they have on each other's lives is profound.

Willy Russell's comedy Educating Rita has been produced and directed by Ian Dickens for Lincoln Theatre Royal, and shows launch at the venue on Thursday, February 28.

Susan, who initially calls herself Rita, is inspired by a desire to change her life and enrolls on an Open University course in English Literature. Her fresh, unschooled reaction to the classics challenges the attitudes of the university and her lecturer, whose disillusionment with life has driven him to the bottle. On the other hand, Susan discovers a new bohemian lifestyle and renewed self-confidence.

Educating Rita has not been out of production since it won the 1980 Society of West End Theatres award for Best Comedy and Best Play. The film version which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine was Oscar-nominated and won three BAFTAs.

Educating Rita at Lincoln Theatre Royal on Thursday, February 28 to Saturday, March 9, various performances including matinees. Tickets start at £7. Box office: 01522 519999, www.lincolntheatreroyal.com
