Lincolnshire Police have apologised to a man accused falsely on their Facebook page of stealing from Tesco.

A CCTV image of Daniel Dand-Hansis - a former Gainsborough town councillor - was published with a message saying the police wanted to speak to him about a theft.

But the store's footage had shown Mr Dand-Hansis paying for his goods before leaving.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “Lincolnshire Police would like to offer Mr Dand-Hansis an unreserved apology. We are sorry for any distress this incident may have caused him.

"This should not have happened and details of the incident will be circulated to officers with the aim of ensuring it does not happen again.”

After being asked by a colleague if he had stolen from Tesco, Mr Dand-Hansis went to Gainsborough police station.

He watched the footage with an officer and the mistake became apparent.

How shocking to discover you have been accused of theft on a Social networking site. Misuse of these sites is becoming far to common. This man should sue!
