A new zebra crossing will be installed after a safety campaign by residents.

Members of Lincolnshire County Council's planning committee have voted unanimously in favour of the crossing in Lincoln Road, North Hykeham.

It comes after 560 residents put pen to paper on a petition supporting the scheme.

It is hoped the new crossing will be ready before Christmas.

North Hykeham resident Rosemary Clark, who spearheaded the campaign, said: "So many people will welcome this move.

"It has been a long campaign and I am delighted the authority has recognised what local residents have been suggesting.

"There is a huge volume of traffic that comes through the town and so this is good news for everybody.

"There was a very serious accident on this particular site about four years ago when a boy was seriously injured by a vehicle.

"He survived but there is still the trauma of the whole incident for him.

"The only disappointing thing with this is that it couldn't quite be done in time for the start of the new school term.

"Lots and lots of children cross Lincoln Road to get to Fosse Way Primary School and they nearly all need their parents to make sure it's safe.

"Around 20 per cent of all the signatures on the petition were from disabled people.

"There are often people on mobility scooters trying to cross the road and this zebra crossing is greatly going to help them too."

The crossing will be introduced at the Lincoln Road, Broadway and Windermere Avenue junction.

Liberal Democrat John Marriott, Hykeham Forum representative for Lincolnshire County Council, said: "This particular area in North Hykeham is extremely busy and extremely dangerous.

"A form of crossing has been desired by residents for a long time now and they will be very happy by this news.

"A lot of credit needs to go to Rosemary Clark who proved there was indeed a problem with people crossing.

"She knocked on a few doors and soon attracted great support."

Conservative Ron Hills, planning and regulation committee member at Lincolnshire County Council, added: "I know this road extremely well. It is a very busy cut through between Lincoln Road, Hykeham Road and Newark Road.

"A zebra crossing is exactly what this part of road needs."
