The organisers of Stamford Apple Day are making a 'desperate' appeal for members of the public to bring windfall fruit to Saturday's annual event.
The fruit is needed to make apple juice drinks for visitors to the special day, organised by Stamford Community Orchard Group, and being held at Stamford Arts' Centre from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Max Winslow, chairman of the group, said: "We are in desperate need of apples to be donated as this year's record-breaking rain, frost and the lack of pollinating insects has resulted in a poor harvest.
"We need buckets and buckets full of them to turn into apple juice drink.
"We would be extremely grateful to anyone who can bring their windfalls along to the event."
Visitors are also invited to bring along apples for identification by The East of England Apples and Orchards Project - which is hoping to find some of the long-lost Stamford varieties. The project will also be showcasing more than 200 varieties of English apple.
Experts from the town's orchard group will be on-hand to offer advice on growing and looking after apple trees.
"A hundred years ago Stamford was famous for its apple growers and over 40 new varieties were created here. Only six are now available, with Peasgood Nonsuch being perhaps the best-known.
"This is the ninth Stamford Apple Day and celebrates this lesser-known aspect of the town's history," added Mr.Winslow.
Other attractions on Saturday will include family games, including pin the maggot on the apple and apple bobbing.
There will also be a tombola and stalls, many of them selling apple-related gifts and produce.
Stamford Community Orchard Group is a registered charity. Its aims are to preserve the old orchards that still exist in the town, establish new orchards and rediscover old apple varieties. The group has planted and manages a community orchard, at the end of Christ Church Close, and has an exciting new site on Uffington Road where members are busy planting different varieties of fruit trees.
