A four-year-old girl has been seriously injured after a train hit a car near Gainsborough.
The accident happened at Misson Springs at around 12.35pm.
A statement by British Transport Police released this evening said: "BTP officers were called to the rail line at Beech Hill crossing, Springs Road, Mission Springs, Nottinghamshire, following a report of a train striking a car.
"Emergency services are on scene and handling the incident.
"The car contained two occupants, a woman and a child. The child, a four-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital in Sheffield, where she is in intensive care.
"The driver, a 67-year-old woman, received neck injuries and bruising and has been taken to hospital in Doncaster.
"The train, a Lincoln to Doncaster service, was damaged but has remained upright and on the tracks. Passengers were removed from the train and there are no reports of injuries.
"Officers are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the vehicle came to be on the tracks. This will include establishing whether there were any witnesses to the incident, while specialist officers will also examine the scene and the car in question.
"The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and Office of Rail Regulation have been notified."
