Police are warning against a voucher scam in Lincolnshire.
It involves ukash, E-Vouchers, Love2shop and others, according to Lincolnshire Police.
These are e-commerce cash payment methods that let consumers exchange their banknotes and coins for a voucher which represents electronic money of the same value. They can then use this money on the internet.
There have recently been a number of incidents across the county.
The victims, often elderly or vulnerable receive a telephone call stating that they owe some money. The fraudsters can use a variety of stories to convince the victim that they owe some money and often state that they are about to be taken to court over the debt.
In a recent case in the Louth area an elderly man was targeted and the criminals claimed he owed £5,000. They offered him the opportunity to pay his debt at an early stage with £1,000 worth of Ukash vouchers and arranged to visit him to collect them.
The man obtained the vouchers but his bank became suspicious and the police were informed. The fraudsters telephoned the victim several times in an effort to get the serial numbers or codes from the vouchers. Had they obtained the numbers or codes that would have been all they required to spend them on-line.
Another variation of the same theme involves fraudsters contacting a vulnerable victim claiming that they, the target, are actually owed some money but they must pay an administration fee in order to have the funds owed to them released.
Protect yourself from fraud: If you receive unexpected phone calls such as these, be suspicious and never give out personal information or pay a fee. Remember that if the caller is legitimate you will be able to call them back on an officially listed phone number at a later date. Always hang up the telephone if you are at all suspicious or concerned.
Call Lincolnshire Police on 101.
