Susan, who initially calls herself Rita, is inspired by a desire to change her life and enrolls on an Open University course in English Literature in the aptly titled Educating Rita.
Her tutor, Dr Frank Bryant, is a middle-aged, alcoholic academic who has taken on the tutorship to pay for his drink.
When the brash and feisty Liverpudlian hairdresser meets the jaded university professor, the effect they have on each other's lives is profound.
Brought to the Trinity Arts Centre in Gainsborough on Friday, April 5, the award-winning Willy Russell play sees Rita's fresh, unschooled reaction to the classics challenge the attitudes of the university and her lecturer, whose disillusionment with life has driven him to the bottle.
On the other hand, Susan discovers a new bohemian lifestyle and renewed self-confidence.
Educating Rita is presented by Hambledon Productions and directed by Daniel Slater with original music by Mark-Anthony Turnage. Cast includes Rachael Hewer and Jonathan Rigby.
